Forum to Focus on City’s Housing Needs

The Thousand Oaks City Council will host a workshop Wednesday to discuss updating the housing section of the General Plan, the city’s long-term blueprint for growth.
Cities are required to have housing elements in their general plans, and the documents must be updated every five years to stay in compliance with state law.
The documents detail the housing needs of an area compared to actual dwellings, and the affordability of the housing.
Thousand Oaks’ current housing element was completed in 1990. Local governments in Southern California have to revise the elements by June 30.
City officials are recommending that the City Council hire consultant Freitas + Freitas for $9,500 to update the plan. The firm has performed similar work for Thousand Oaks previously. And the city was declared in compliance with state law, something many cities have never been able to do, according to a city report.
