Titans 3rd in Big West Gymnastics

Cal State Fullerton finished third at the Big West Conference gymnastics championships Saturday night in Logan, Utah.

The Titans’ depth helped them finish high in the standings despite Christy Lutz, Cristi Clifford and Katy Maty finishing 10th through 12th in the individual all-around.

Fullerton had 191.775 points. Utah State won the title with 193.650 and Boise State was second with 191.925.

Boise State’s Johnna Evans won the all-around and was named the conference’s athlete of the year.

In Big West softball:

Long Beach State 6-3, Hawaii 1-0--Pitchers Marie O’Beck, Tammy Dietrich and Amy Miner combined to hold Hawaii (24-15, 6-8) to one run and 14 hits in a doubleheader. Amanda Adams had three hits for Long Beach State (20-15, 8-4) in the first game.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 2-4, Point Loma Nazarene 1-0 (first game, 9)--Angela Wolf had a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Vanguards even in the first game and Chrissy Vega won it with an RBI single in the ninth.

Jen Houston (6-7), who struck out 11 in the first game, came back with a two-hitter in the second. Heather Rogers had two doubles and two RBIs for SCC (14-13-2, 5-1).

In the UCI Marriott men’s tennis tournament:

UC Irvine 5, Colorado 2--The 24th-ranked Anteaters advanced to today’s championship match by defeating No. 34 Colorado. UC Irvine (11-5), which will play 23rd-ranked Middle Tennessee State, was led by Julian Foxon, who beat Atur Rusiecki, 6-3, 6-4.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 4, Point Loma Nazarene 3--Kevin Villar and Jeff Baker swept their singles matches then teamed for a doubles victory for host SCC.

At the Stanford Track and Field Invitational:

UC Irvine finishes third--Toby Dean and Popi Edwards finished first and second in the women’s 100 meters with times of 12.18 and 12.32 for the third-place Anteaters.

Stanford won the invitational with 216 points, Irvine had 121 1/2.

In nonconference track and field:

Obadike wins event--Obi Obadike won the 200 in 21.70 and Mark Sinderson finished first in the 5,000 in 15 minutes 12.38 seconds, highlighting Cal State Fullerton’s afternoon during a nonscoring meet at Fullerton.

For the women, Fullerton’s Julie Petrilla was first in the 100 (12.55) and 200 (25.92).

SCC records set--Tim Hardin and Angie LaMance each broke school marks for the Vanguards at a meet at UC San Diego. Hardin finished the 10,000 in 32:14. LaMance went 33 feet 6 inches in the triple jump.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 0--Tom Hoff had 12 kills for Long Beach State (18-4, 12-3), which won, 15-11, 15-8, 15-1. Cory Hinkle had 21 assists for UC Irvine (7-13, 2-12).
