Western Rallies to Get Past Loara in Lions Tournament

Western rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and held on to defeat Loara, 8-7, in pool play of the Anaheim Lions baseball tournament Saturday at Glover Stadium.

Loara had scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead, but Anthony Ortiz had an RBI triple to tie the score and Jim Conway then doubled in Ortiz.

Conway (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Dean Chambers had a three-run homer for Western (8-5) in its four-run first inning.

In other Lions tournament games:

Anaheim 8, Downey Warren 5--Joe Palacio was two for three with a triple and an RBI for Anaheim (4-9). The Colonists play Whittier California at Glover Stadium at 7 p.m. Monday.

Cypress 22, Whittier California 0--Bob Brito was three for three with a double, home run and four RBIs for Cypress. Nate Endicott was also three for three, with a double and six RBIs, for the Centurions (10-3).

Kennedy 7, Paramount 6--Jeremy Neuner had a bases-loaded, one-out single in the seventh to win the game for Kennedy. George Carralejo was two for three with an RBI and pitched the seventh to improve his record to 3-3 for the Fighting Irish (8-5).

Magnolia 10, El Modena 5--Brian Morris (2-0) went the distance for Magnolia and was three for four at the plate. Colt Martin and Justin Reding each went two for four for the Sentinels (8-1).

In the Santa Ana Elks tournament:

Katella 9, Marshall (Va.) 1--Cameron Flading went two for three with three runs scored for Katella (9-4).

Orange 7, Santiago 4--Eric Mendoza had two hits and three RBIs for Orange (6-5).

Villa Park 13, Saddleback 6--Brian Buckland had three hits, including a double, and four RBIs for Villa Park (6-5-1) in a first round game. Ryan Ferguson had 10 strikeouts for the Spartans.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 5, Huntington Beach 2--Fountain Valley (9-3, 4-1) rallied for three runs in the sixth, highlighted by Wes Tomerleau’s two-run double, to break a 2-2 tie. Kevin Burford hit his third homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the first inning.
