Human Rights Don’t Stop, Start at Border

Share

* My name is Lupe Escamilla, I’m 12 years old and in the seventh grade at Charles F. Blackstock Jr. High in Oxnard. My friends and I have been talking about the incident where a lady by the name of [Alicia Sotero Vasquez] and a man were beaten by deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. This letter is to show how most kids my age think.

The cops who did this were hired to protect and to serve, not beat and injure. For those cops, it’s probably not the first time they’ve done this, but the first time they got caught.

The Constitution is for everyone. Even though they crossed the border illegally, they are all still human beings with human rights.

My parents are Mexican immigrants and both of my grandfathers came here the first time illegally. I know what they went through from the stories my parents have told me. Now, my parents are very successful business people.
