Wind-Aided Blaze Damages Two Homes
A two-alarm fire, possibly ignited by a palm tree grazing power lines, swept through two houses Friday morning.
Three dozen firefighters from three cities were summoned to put out the blaze, which began in a home in the 400 block of 62nd Street and, in gusting Santa Ana winds, spread to a neighboring house, said John Blauer, spokesman for the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department.
The fire, contained within 30 minutes, caused about $100,000 damage to the first home and $30,000 to the second, he said. No one was injured.
Winds of 20 to 25 mph also carried embers a block away, briefly igniting about 30 square feet of the roof on a third home and causing an additional $1,000 damage.
