The Orange Bowl, originally scheduled for Dec. 30 this year, will be played a day later so it will not compete with the Holiday Bowl.

The Orange Bowl would not be opposed by another bowl game in prime time on New Year’s Eve.

Officials of the Orange Bowl said the game will start shortly after 7 p.m. on a Tuesday night, more than an hour earlier than past Orange Bowls.

CBS and the Orange Bowl originally were leaning toward scheduling their game Dec. 30, but changed their minds because of the Holiday Bowl competition.

“Also, having the Orange Bowl Dec. 31 allows us to have a Sun Bowl-Orange Bowl double-header, with the Sun Bowl from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.,” said Len DeLuca, CBS Sports’ vice president for programming.

The Orange Bowl will be played for the first time at Joe Robbie Stadium. The stadium is the home of the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Marlins.

The Orange Bowl has been played at the historic Orange Bowl.
