Bullets’ Late Surge Continues

The Washington Bullets don’t have Chris Webber, Rasheed Wallace, Robert Pack or Mark Price, but they do have a chance at getting into the playoffs for the first time since 1988.

Juwan Howard had 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Bullets defeated the Miami Heat, 111-99, Monday night at Landover, Md.

Brent Price scored 21 points for the Bullets (36-39), whose fourth consecutive victory moved them within one game of ninth-place Miami (37-38) in the Eastern Conference standings.

Washington rookie Rasheed Wallace, who is sidelined because of a broken left thumb, was arrested Sunday in North Carolina and charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly failing to obey a restraining order filed against him by his ex-girlfriend.

San Antonio 92, Utah 91--Avery Johnson made one of two free throws with 43 seconds left and the Spurs escaped with a victory when Utah’s David Benoit missed a three-point shot in the final second at Salt Lake City.

Indiana 97, Atlanta 95--Reggie Miller scored 24 points, including the Pacers’ final eight in the last two minutes, as Indiana held off an Atlanta rally from 14 points down at Indianapolis.

Minnesota 115, Toronto 101--Isaiah Rider scored 28 points and rookie Kevin Garnett 23 at Minneapolis.

Philadelphia 82, New Jersey 79--Vernon Maxwell scored half of Philadelphia’s points with a season-high 41, and Rex Walters made two free throws with 10.8 seconds left to give the 76ers the victory at Philadelphia.

Dallas 104, Golden State 102--Jason Kidd had 21 points, 12 assists, nine rebounds and the clinching free throws with four seconds left at Oakland.

Seattle 108, New York 98--Shawn Kemp scored 25 points for the SuperSonics in a game postponed three months ago by a blizzard on the East coast.
