BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : Reds Accept Ruffin’s Reason for Jail Stay

The Cincinnati Reds are satisfied with reliever Johnny Ruffin’s explanation of his arrest early Tuesday on misdemeanor traffic charges.

Ruffin spent the night at the Hamilton County Justice Center, pleaded innocent at his arraignment in Municipal Court, and was released after posting $50 bond. He has a pretrial hearing scheduled for May 14.

Ruffin, 24, was a passenger in a car that was stopped about 3 a.m. for a traffic violation, police said. Ruffin was charged with failing to wear a seat belt, and a computer check revealed he had failed to appear in court last year on charges of speeding and not having a driver’s license.

Ruffin said he failed to appear in court last year because he was sent to the minors that day.

Brave pitcher Pedro Borbon returned to Atlanta to undergo tests on his sore shoulder, a day after being placed on the disabled list.

Tom Thobe, a left-hander who was with the team in spring training and opened the season at triple-A Richmond, was called up to replace Borbon on the roster.

A woman who fell 35 feet from the right-field upper deck at The Ballpark in Arlington during its regular-season debut in 1994 has sued the Texas Rangers and the park’s architects, alleging negligence.

Hollye Minter, 28, was posing for a photograph after the April 11, 1994, season opener when she fell from the railing of the right field “Home Run Porch” and landed on empty lower-level seats. She broke her right arm, two ribs and several bones in her neck.
