A 4-year-old girl was struck by a slow-moving car and suffered massive head injuries Saturday after she broke away from her mother’s grasp and bolted into a street, police said.

She was taken to the trauma center at Western Medical Center, where “her prognosis is uncertain,” according to police. She was still undergoing tests late Saturday.

The driver, a 17-year-old boy, was traveling at 15 to 20 mph, officers said. He was not cited or held in the accident.

Police, who did not identify the girl or the driver, said the girl was part of a group of children and adults walking in the 800 block of North Loara Street.

As the group waited to cross the street mid-block from behind a line of parked cars at about 6 p.m. Saturday, the girl broke away from her mother’s grasp and began to cross. She was the only one struck by the car, officers said.

Only half an hour earlier, an 8-year-old boy riding his bicycle on Candlewood Street at Kenwood Place in Anaheim turned in front of a van and was struck.

Police said the boy was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. He was reported in guarded condition at UCI Medical Center.

The driver of the van was not held in connection with the accident.
