Troy’s Pitts Helps Defeat West Torrance
Jessica Pitts broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to lift Troy over West Torrance, 3-1, Saturday in the championship game of the Westminster Lions tournament.
Valery Kerbs (5-3) struck out 11 to earn the victory and Katie Smithson also hit her first home run with the bases empty in the fourth inning for Troy (11-5).
The Warriors escaped a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the bottom of the seventh, with a perfectly executed hidden-ball trick. Catcher Jaclyn Blankenship faked a throw to second, sending the Troy defense scrambling into the outfield. West Torrance’s runner came home, only to be tagged out by Blankenship, who still held the ball at the plate.
