103 Schools Join LEARN Program; 1 Kept Out

Another 103 Los Angeles schools were admitted to the LEARN reform program Monday, bringing the total force to 300 campuses.

The largest number came from the San Pedro area, where 16 schools accepted the challenge of taking control of their own governance and, eventually, their own budgets.

Only one of this year’s applicants, 6th Avenue School, was held out of the approval group because of a dispute over the voting process.

Under LEARN rules, 75% of a school’s teachers must vote to enter the reform program, and at the elementary school near downtown, three votes were taken in various ways and with varying results.

Supt. Sid Thompson said the Los Angeles Unified School District still hopes to include 6th Avenue in this year’s group.

“We’re working with them, trying to work it out,” he said.
