Residents Urge Mayor to Take Stand on Affirmative Action
City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas delivered more than 500 postcards from South-Central Los Angeles residents to Mayor Richard Riordan, urging the city’s top official to take a stand on the controversial “California civil rights initiative.”
“When will you take a stand and show leadership--one way or the other?” the chartreuse and orange cards ask.
The measure, whose qualification for the November ballot is expected to be announced this week, would effectively gut affirmative action programs for hiring and contracting in government. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously earlier this year to oppose the initiative, but Riordan has insisted that it would be divisive for him to pick a side.
