Red Sox Put Naehring on Disabled List

The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Tim Naehring on the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday afternoon’s game against the Cleveland Indians and called up infielder Jim Tatum from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Naehring, 29, left Sunday’s game against Cleveland because of a strained left hamstring. He was batting .276 with two home runs and five runs batted in in 10 games this season.

Tatum, 28, was six for 20 with one homer and three RBIs in six games with Pawtucket of the International League.

Attendance increased during the second week of the season and is 6.9% above last season’s average.

Attendance averaged 27,281 for the first 159 dates, up from 25,532 for the similar period at the start of last season. The average had been up 4.5% in this season’s first week.

When compared with last season’s final average of 25,257, attendance is up 8%.

Following the 232-day strike, average attendance dropped 20% last year from the 1994 average of 31,257.

The Detroit Tigers placed reserve outfielder Curtis Pride on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left shoulder.

Pride, 27, was 0 for 11 in seven games with one stolen base. He originally strained the shoulder during spring training.

To replace Pride on the roster, the Tigers recalled infielder Tim Hyers from Triple-A Toledo of the International League.

The Oakland Athletics called up pitcher Steve Wojciechowski to start Monday’s 8-3 victory over the Texas Rangers and sent Steve Montgomery to triple-A Edmonton. But Wojciechowski was forced to leave the game with two out in the second after taking a line drive off his pitching hand.
