BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Grimsley to Join Roster and Rotation

The Angels will likely shake up their starting rotation by inserting Jason Grimsley, who was at Anaheim Stadium Wednesday.

Grimsley was 2-0 with 1.20 earned-run average at Vancouver and will be added to the roster this week, according to Manager Marcel Lachemann. Grimsley’s promotion probably means a demotion for Shawn Boskie, at least to the bullpen.

Boskie failed to protect a 9-1 lead in Monday’s 11-10 loss to Seattle. He gave up six runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Asked whether Grimsley would take Boskie’s turn in the rotation Saturday, Lachemann said: “That’s not out of the realm of possibilities.”

Grimsley, 28, was acquired from Cleveland in February for pitcher Brian Anderson. Grimsley was 0-0 with a 6.09 ERA in 15 games with Cleveland last season. He made 13 starts and was 5-2 with the Indians in 1994.

On Tuesday, the Angels purchased Todd Frohwirth’s contract and optioned Dennis Springer to Vancouver.

Chili Davis, who has missed three games because of back spasms, is expected to return to the lineup on schedule. He will play tonight, Lachemann said.

“He felt good [Tuesday] and even better today,” Lachemann said. “But with backs, you are never sure until you go at full speed.”

Third baseman George Arias nearly had his first major league home run, off Randy Johnson no less, Tuesday night. Instead, he was robbed of a home run, by Ken Griffey Jr. But Griffey made a leaping catch to take a two-run home run away from Arias in the fourth inning.

“I thought I hit it pretty good,” Arias said. “But I was kidding myself.”

He may yet have the last laugh. Arias had 30 home runs at double-A Midland last season.
