City Adopts Rules for Planned Sports Park

Share

Weighing the concerns of both sports leagues and residents, the City Council this week adopted policies regulating hours of operation, lighting and the use of speakers at the long-awaited sports park at Kinoshita Farm.

Under the plan, activities must conclude by about 9 p.m., and lights turn off at 9:30. Loudspeakers will be used only for opening and closing ceremonies, team introductions and for city events on occasions such as the Fourth of July. Play-by-play announcing will be prohibited.

In addition, top priority will be given to city-sponsored events, local youth sports groups, local private schools and senior groups, with other sports and community organizations accommodated as possible.

The city still must consider whether to install protective netting and will conduct an acoustical test in the nearby neighborhood before adopting further policies.

The sports park, due to open in midsummer, will include soccer fields, a lighted baseball and softball diamond and a concession building.
