RSVP / THE SOCIAL CITY : New for L.A.: Our First Antiques Show

San Francisco has one. New York has one. Now the powers that be are establishing the Los Angeles Antiques Show.

Sally Gould Wright, president of Richard Gould Antiques on Melrose and vice president of the Antique Dealers Assn. of California, has announced that the first Los Angeles Antiques Show will be held May 17-19 at the Barker Hangar on the south field at Santa Monica Airport. Sixty-three international dealers will show off their antiques against a background designed by well-known florist Walter Hubert of Silver Birches.

The Women’s Guild of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center will host the gala opening May 16. Honorary co-chairs will be Michael and Jane Eisner and Michael and Judy Ovitz. Beverly Firestein, president of the Women’s Guild, expects the opening to be a major fund-raiser for the hospital. The guild is the sole support of the hospital’s AIDS Hospice Unit and also gives to women’s health studies at Cedars.

An honorary committee includes Mayor Richard Riordan; Nancy Daly; Gov. Pete Wilson and his wife, Gayle; Stewart and Lynda Resnick; Wallis Annenberg; Larry Gagosian; Rose Tarlow; and Kirk Douglas.

Gaylord Dillingham, San Francisco antiques dealer, heads the Antique Dealers Assn. Daniel Stein, also a San Francisco dealer, is chairman of the show.

Zubin’s 60th: Nancy Mehta, Anne and Kirk Douglas and Toby and Itzhak Perlman highlight the list of benefit co-chairs for “The Concert” (Mozart, Beethoven and Ravel) and the gala dinner celebrating Zubin Mehta’s 60th birthday April 29. “The Concert” at the Music Center will bring together the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and artists Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman and Perlman. Later, Mehta, artists and patrons will gather in the Grand Hall for a post-concert supper.

The evening’s gala benefactor is the Max and Pauline Zimmer Family Foundation. Proceeds will be divided equally between the Los Angeles Philharmonic Musicians Pension Fund (Mehta was music director from 1962-’78) and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s 60th Anniversary Fund. Mehta is music director for life of the Israel Philharmonic.

Barbara Bush: The former first lady will speak Wednesday in Montecito at Mira Vista, the lovely and recently restored home of Tina and Robert Gale. Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara One Hundred Committee (“Women Helping Girls”) will host the luncheon and VIP reception. In the past, 300 women have attended, but this year, says Gail Gelles, the committee is expecting 500, plus a table of “godfathers” who will fork over $1,000 to attend.

Another Farewell: David and Barbara Simmons and Gerry and Alice Bucci are inviting their party animal friends to say au revoir this evening to the Bistro Garden, which is closing, and to celebrate the merger of Capital Cities/ABC Inc. with the Walt Disney Co.

Afternoon Frolic: Five hundred left the outdoor California sunshine to cluster in the underground Biltmore Ballroom last week and sip and sup and bid at the International Wine Auction to benefit the Los Angeles Music Center Opera.

The sip: wine tasting from wineries such as Jordan, Justin, Moraga, Pahlmeyer, Schramsberg, Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia, Trefethen, Peter Michael, Maison Louis Jadot, Long, Far Niente, Etude, Duckhorn, and on and on.

The sup: tastings from Yujean Kang, Michael’s, the Biltmore, Spago, Citrus, Twin Palms, Valentino, Campanile, Patina and Pinot, Joss, Water Grill and Res Il Ristorante that made the mouths water.

Event chairwoman Joyce Rosenblum had worked more than a year on the benefit, which will net more than $200,000. Robert Bookman, Terry Gloege, Warner Henry and Ed Landry were among those who donated. And a committee including two III’s--Raoul F. Balcaen III and David N. Barry III--tasted and selected the wines that Christie’s noted wine auctioneer Ursula Hermacinski bid up.

Filling her wine cellar, Dee May bid $7,500 for the Duckhorn merlot, $2,600 for a case of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, 1975; $1,900 for six vertical magnums of Etude Winery Pinot Noir Carneros. Michael Harahan and Warner Henry were frequent bidders. Carol and Warner Henry paid $7,000 for a “loverly lunch” in London at Berry Bros. & Rudd, the 17th century wine shop, and an evening of opera with Peter (L.A. Opera general director) and Jane Hemmings.

Martie and Larry Frierson of Manhattan Beach bought the trip to Australia and a treat to the Australian Opera and tastings at Hunter Valley wineries. Missy Crahan bought the cocktail reception for 50 donated by the Henrys at their Arroyo home. Ann and Roland Macbeth spent $13,000 for France--Paris, Reims and Chantilly--with Dona and Dwight Kendall. Dr. Theodore O’Connell and his wife, Frances, picked up the Thailand trip, and Nagu and Venk Venkatesh, the trip to Bali. Doug and Carol Mancino parted with $4,000 for a dinner--not breakfast--for 24 at Tiffany & Co. with wines from the cellar of Tiffany chairman William Chaney.
