Brewers Keep Running It Up in 12-4 Victory

Play for one, and many may come. That’s the way the Milwaukee Brewers approach things, and it’s working.

The Brewers scored eight or more runs for the fourth consecutive time, getting 20 hits to beat Kansas City, 12-4, on Saturday at Arlington, Tex.

“It’s a game philosophy of trying to get that one run,” Brewers Manager Phil Garner said. “We’re doing a magic act of picking each other up, moving the runners along, getting the runner home from third. It’s feeding on itself.”

Mike Matheny had three hits and drove in three runs, and John Jaha had three hits and drove in two runs. Pat Listach and Jeff Cirillo also had three hits each.

The Brewers scored four runs off Jason Jacome (0-1) in 2 2/3 innings, and got four more off Terry Clark in the seventh.

Angel Miranda (1-0) pitched five innings, giving up two hits, as Milwaukee went to a fifth starter for the first time this season.

New York 7, Minnesota 6--Ruben Sierra homered twice and drove in four runs as the Yankess spoiled Rick Aguilera’s return to the starting rotation with the victory over the Twins at Minneapolis.

Aguilera lasted only three innings in his first start since 1989. He gave up Sierra’s two-run homer in the third. Sierra added a solo homer off Dave Stevens in the ninth as New York stopped a three-game losing streak and a six-game road skid.

Bob Wickman (1-0), the fourth New York pitcher, threw 1 2/3 innings for the victory. John Wetteland pitched the ninth for his second save.

Chicago 8, Oakland 3--Tony Phillips homered and drove in four runs and the White Sox defeated the Athletics at Oakland.

Frank Thomas went 0-for-3 with two walks and ended his 15-game hitting streak.

Phillips’ three-run homer capped a four-run burst in the seventh inning. He added an run-scoring single in the eighth.

Kevin Tapani (1-0) won his first decision for the White Sox. Making his third start, he allowed six hits in seven innings.

Todd Van Poppel (0-2) did not give up a hit until Dave Martinez sliced a two-run double in the fourth.

Cleveland 2, Boston 1--Jack McDowell pitched a five hitter over seven-plus innings for his second victory over the Red Sox this week, and Julio Franco had a two-run single to lead the Indians at Cleveland.

McDowell (2-1), who earned his 13th career shutout in a 8-0 victory Monday, allowed one run before leaving with two outs and a man on in the seventh. Jose Mesa pitched the ninth for the save.

Tim Wakefield (0-3) took the loss despite allowing only five hits in seven innings and striking out five.

Texas 8, Baltimore 3--Will Clark drove in four runs, including a three-run homer in the first inning, and Juan Gonzalez added a two-run homer as the Rangers defeated Orioles at Arlington, Texas.

Ivan Rodriguez went three for five with a solo homer, double and single for Texas, which has scored 46 runs in three games.

Texas kept up the pressure against Jimmy Haynes (0-3), Baltimore’s No. 5 starter, and sent the Orioles to third consecutive loss.

Kevin Gross (3-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Brady Anderson homered twice for Baltimore.

Toronto 3, Seattle 1--Juan Guzman allowed five hits in eight innings, and Shawn Green homered and doubled in the go-ahead run, leading the Blue Jays over the Mariners at Seattle.

Guzman (3-1) allowed five hits in eight innings, struck out seven and walked two. Mike Timlin pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Ken Griffey Jr., batting just .217, accounted for Seattle’s run with his sixth homer.

Seattle’s Paul Menhart (0-2), who has a 7.15 earned-run average, gave up all three runs and seven hits in six innings.
