Man Found Dead After Apparent Fall

A former Ventura resident on a fishing expedition to Santa Cruz Island died after he apparently fell off a 30-foot cliff.

Raymond Joseph Maugeri, 36, of Myrtle Creek, Ore., was discovered about 6:40 p.m. Saturday on the beach below the cliff. It was unclear Sunday why he fell, said Lt. Roy Rosales of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

Maugeri was visiting the island with his brother-in-law, Edward Sanders of Ventura, when the two became separated in the area of Pelican Bay. Sanders went to look for Maugeri and found him bleeding beneath the 30-foot drop.

A medical technician aboard a charter boat visiting the island determined that Maugeri was dead. With less than an hour before dark and 30- to 40-knot winds scouring the island, Coast Guard and Sheriff’s Department officials decided to wait until Sunday to bring Maugeri’s body to the mainland, Rosales said.

The Sheriff’s Department sent a helicopter Sunday morning to recover the body.
