Ashley Goes on Disabled List

Share

Billy Ashley, on the verge of becoming the everyday left fielder, was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained right hamstring. The Dodgers recalled infielder Juan Castro from triple-A Albuquerque. Ashley injured the hamstring in the first inning Saturday night at Florida when his spikes got caught on the turf while trying to field Terry Pendleton’s single.

The move means that Roger Cedeno and Todd Hollandsworth will platoon in left field.

“I feel real comfortable now, much more confident “ said Cedeno, batting .308 with a double and triple in 13 at-bats. “I know I can do the job.”

Cedeno, a switch-hitter, is batting .571 right-handed but is hitless in six at-bats left-handed. Cedeno believes he’s a better hitter left-handed, but the Dodgers are convinced otherwise, and he will play strictly against lefties at this time.

Castro was batting .372 with three doubles and a triple, but the Dodgers would have preferred summoning another player from Albuquerque.

But third baseman Mike Busch is out because of a foot injury, infielder Garey Ingram is out because of a calf strain, catcher Tom Prince has a sprained ankle, and outfielders Rick Parker (hamstring) and Billy Lott (sprained arm) are also sidelined.
