July 4th Fireworks Show May Be Revived

A plan to revive the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show has won preliminary approval from the City Council.

The La Habra Firefighters Assn. used to sponsor an annual fireworks show but stopped 15 years ago because the event was not profitable, city officials said.

This year, the city will consider co-sponsorship. City Council members said that a fireworks show might discourage residents from illegally lighting fireworks at their homes, which has been an increasing problem.

“It has been a long time since La Habra had a fireworks show, and it’s time for us to look at having it here for residents,” Councilman Juan M. Garcia said. “We could probably come up with some co-sponsorship.”

The council approved the show in concept and will take final action once it has a cost estimate. The event could be at La Habra High School, council members said.

Representatives of local service clubs also told the council that they would consider co-sponsoring the show.
