Northridge : CSUN’s EarthFair Targets Environment

Highlighting a week of special events to mark Earth Day 1996, Cal State Northridge will host a daylong fair today featuring educational displays, live entertainment and a recycling-themed sculpture competition.

EarthFair, which is open to the public, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University Student Union’s outdoor Court of Community, said Cyndi Signett, CSUN’s recycling coordinator. The free event is sponsored by Associated Students, CSUN’s student government organization.

Participants will include the San Fernando Valley Sierra Club, the Metropolitan Transportation Agency and the Air Quality Management District. Each group will offer free information about how to protect and preserve the Earth’s natural resources.

At noon, CSUN’s Jazz ‘A’ Band will perform under the direction of Glenn Garrett. At 1 p.m., the winning entries in the third annual Can Sculpture Contest will be announced. Using only aluminum cans, participants create recyclable works of art for cash prizes.

According to Signett, the fair’s goal is to focus attention on environmental issues, “to give students, faculty and staff a broad base of information to draw from, to try to educate them about how they can get involved,” she said. “The world we live in is very important. We need it.”
