Amalfitano: The Eyes Have It
Third base coach Joe Amalfitano, who was ejected by home plate umpire Bob Davidson in the 10th inning of Saturday night’s 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs after protesting a balk on reliever Antonio Osuna, said he never misses anything.
“Sometimes I wish I didn’t see the things I see,” Amalfitano said. “I was trained by some real good people to be an observer and to pay attention to details.”

Catcher Mike Piazza, bothered by tendinitis in his right knee, extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He is batting .360 with three home runs, four doubles, six runs and 13 RBIs in his streak. . . . Pitcher Tom Candiotti, forced to leave after the first inning Saturday night because of a sore right knee, is scheduled to have an MRI test and be examined by Dr. Frank Jobe today. Candiotti, who said he felt better Sunday, doesn’t know if he’s going to miss his next start. . . . First baseman Eric Karros, who sat out one game last season, was sidelined for his sixth consecutive game because of a strained rib cage. Karros took batting practice before the game. . . . Shortstop Greg Gagne sat out a second game in a row because of a strained hamstring.
