Grand Fire Contained; Cost Now at $1.7 Million
The 10,925-acre Grand fire was fully contained by 6 p.m. Thursday with full control expected Tuesday, authorities said.
Fighting the wildfire, which scorched land from Fillmore to the edge of Santa Paula, has cost $1.7 million so far, said Los Padres National Forest officials.
Air quality in Ventura County, which had been affected by smoke from the Grand fire and the end of Santa Ana winds that had pushed air pollution off the coast, improved slightly Thursday, said Gary Arcemont of the county’s Air Pollution Control District.
However, air quality remained moderate and is expected to improve slightly over the weekend, Arcemont said.
In the wake of the season’s first wildfire and the excessively dry condition of grass and brush, Ventura County Fire Department officials are asking residents to clear dead plant materials from under trees and to clear brush from within 100 feet of a property to reduce fire hazards.
About 20,000 brush clearance notices have been mailed to county property owners who must clear specific areas 100 feet from any structures by June 1. The clearance allows firefighters room to protect structures from fires.
