Pepperdine Sweeps to Remain in Race

Gerardo Gonzalez drove in two runs on two hits in the first game, and homered twice and had four hits in the second game as Pepperdine swept a West Coast Conference doubleheader, 7-0 and 9-3, Saturday at San Diego.

Greg Gregory (6-5) pitched a seven-hit, seven-inning shutout in the first game.

Pepperdine (31-19, 18-6), which trails Santa Clara by a half-game, will play its final regular-season game today at San Diego (21-27-1, 15-8). The championship won’t be determined until this week when Santa Clara plays a three-game series at St. Mary’s.

Oxnard 13, Hancock 3--Matt Buttell had three hits, including a three-run home run, for the Condors (31-8, 22-4) in a Western State Conference game. Josh Towers (11-1) gave up five hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Pierce 21, Mission 5--Dave Supple had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs for the Brahmas (28-12, 18-8) in WSC game. Dave Cipolla had five RBIs and Mike Glendenning hit his 17th home run for Pierce.

Moorpark 10, Ventura 2--Scott Miller had three hits and scored twice as the Raiders (14-22, 12-14) pounded out 17 hits at Ventura (20-13, 13-13) in a WSC game.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 1, San Marcos 0--Freshman Karen LeBlank singled home Amanda Crafton in the ninth inning, and Lori Tande (9-7) pitched a four-hitter to lead the Pioneers (14-11) in the fifth-place game of the Thousand Oaks tournament. LeBlank had all three of Simi Valley’s hits.

St. Joseph 5, Thousand Oaks 0--Kerri Duncan pitched a two-hitter for the Knights (21-5) in the third-place game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Buena 2, Agoura 0--Erin Kelly (10-4) pitched a two-hitter for the Bulldogs (16-8) in the Thousand Oaks tournament consolation final.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

California 5, Pepperdine 1--Kathrin Denn defeated Stephanie Tibbits, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, but the top-seeded Waves (17-8) fell in the NCAA West Regional.
