Berry Much

Get ready for every possible edible configuration of strawberries this weekend at the California Strawberry Festival (F1A). . . . Jeanne Azbell, above, is baking strawberry muffins and bread to benefit the youth music program at First Baptist Church of Oxnard. There will be other vendors offering shortcake, of course, and chocolate-covered strawberries. . . . But hold onto your stomach because there will also be strawberry pizza, crepes, drinks, jams, pies, garnishes, tarts, salad, sundaes, burritos and kebabs.

Still Magic

Even though Magic Johnson has retired for what appears to be the final time, his youth basketball camp at Cal Lutheran University is still set for this summer. . . . “It’s definitely on and he’s looking forward to it,” said Denise Villanueva, director of Magic Johnson’s All-Star Camps. This will be the camp’s 15th year, and about 400 kids are expected. Villanueva said the weeklong dribble fest is safe, “permanently. This doesn’t affect it. He’ll be there.”

New Hospital Plan

Assemblyman Brooks Firestone (R-Los Olivos) and state Sen. Jack O’Connell (D-Santa Barbara) have asked the governor in a letter to convert Camarillo State Hospital to a California State University campus (B1). The politicians also suggest sharing the facility with developmentally disabled patients, pointing out that the complex’s 750 acres should provide plenty of room for a joint operation. Gov. Pete Wilson is said to be intrigued by the possibility.
