McCollum Named Hueneme Coach

Tom McCollum, the top assistant on the Cal State Northridge men’s basketball coaching staff the past six seasons, has been hired as head boys’ basketball coach at Hueneme High.

McCollum, 47, said he was offered the position last month and accepted it last week. The move becomes official today.

McCollum is Hueneme’s fourth coach in four years, but he said he plans to stay a while. “The situation there hasn’t been conducive to the program growing,” McCollum said from his Santa Barbara home Wednesday night. “It will be now.”

Hueneme was 3-21 last season, winless in Channel League play.

McCollum left Northridge when the school did not renew Coach Pete Cassidy’s contract. At Hueneme, McCollum will be a full-time physical education instructor.

Before Northridge, McCollum was head coach at Carpinteria High.
