Memorial Day Rites Scheduled Monday

Flags will be flying Monday as people attend Memorial Day services at sites throughout Ventura County.

At Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, the annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., with County Supervisor Susan K. Lacey the keynote speaker. A free buffet lunch will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1679, 3801 Market St., Ventura.

Featured at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park will be the Veterans Avenue of Flags, made up of 700 flags dedicated to deceased Ventura County veterans and donated on behalf of their families.

At Conejo Mountain Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Camarillo, a service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, including speakers Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard), County Supervisor Maggie Kildee, Camarillo City Councilman Mike Morgan and Capt. Stephen D. Beal, commanding officer at the Naval Air Weapons Station at Point Mugu.

The service will also include a performance by the Harbor Joy choir from Harbor Missionary Church in Ventura and a flyover by the Confederate Air Force, Southern California Wing. The Lee Jennings Veterans’ Memorial Avenue of the Flags will also be featured.

Memorial Day services will also be held at the Piru Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. and Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore at 11 a.m. The program, which will be the same at both services, will include the presentation of colors and honor guard by Vietnam Veterans of Ventura County; a message by the Rev. William Ellington of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fillmore, and the pledge of allegiance by Capt. John L. Garnica, the first Fillmore High School alumnus to graduate from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point.

Santa Paula Cemetery will also hold a service at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at both Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard and Assumption Cemetery in Simi Valley.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum will offer free admission to veterans Monday. Among the exhibits on display will be “Gifts of Diplomacy,” presents from foreign heads of state; and items representing Poland’s Solidarity movement.
