Woman’s Injury at Jetty Spurs Warning

After a woman broke her leg at a Corona del Mar jetty Monday, the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department warned beach-goers to stay clear of such areas if they appear dangerous.
“People are allowed on the rocks, but they should take into consideration their physical limitations,” Fire and Marine Lt. John Blauer said. “We need people to use their common sense.”
The jetties are typically used by anglers and are closed to the public during high swells, Blauer said.
Posted signs at each of the city’s 10 jetties warn people to walk on the rocks with caution.
Blauer said Monday’s incident shows that people may forget how dangerous the jetties can be.
“Under ordinary circumstances, a broken leg is nothing more than a stretcher ride to an ambulance,” he said.
But the rough terrain of the beaches and the jetties “increases transport time and requires considerable manpower to move injured visitors to safety.”
Ten rescue personnel were involved in Monday’s effort, he said.
