Scott Livingstone came off the bench two innings later than he expected, but came through just as he had hoped.

Livingstone’s pinch-hit single scored Wally Joyner with the go-ahead run in the 10th inning Tuesday night, lifting the San Diego Padres over the Expos, 3-2, at Montreal.

The Padres trailed, 1-0, in the eighth when Luis Lopez hit a two-out, two-run home run off Pedro Martinez. Livingstone was on deck at the time, ready to hit for starter Bob Tewksbury if Lopez kept the inning alive. Livingstone didn’t have to hit.

“When Luis homered, I went back to the bench and shut it down,” Livingstone said.

But when Montreal tied the score in the ninth on Henry Rodriguez’s 18th home run, “I reached for my batting gloves again,” Livingstone said.

Joyner opened the 10th inning with a single and then moved to second base on Brian Johnson’s sacrifice and scored on Livingstone’s pinch-hit.

San Diego won for the sixth time in seven games. Montreal has lost five in a row and 11 of 13.

Tewksbury gave up one run on four hits and retired the last 15 batters he faced. He struck out three and walked two.

Pittsburgh 6, Houston 5--Charlie Hayes hit a two-run home run and Jason Kendall tripled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to rally the Pirates at Pittsburgh.

Trailing, 4-2, in the eighth, Hayes tied the score with his two-run homer. Two outs later, Jay Bell singled and Hayes followed with his eighth homer.

John Wehner then walked and scored when Kendall tripled off the center-field wall. Kendall scored on the play when center fielder Brian Hunter bobbled the ball.

The Astros rallied in the ninth on John Cangelosi’s one-out run-scoring single off Francisco Cordova. Hunter’s single moved Cangelosi to second before Craig Biggio singled--his fourth hit--to right and Cangelosi was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Orlando Merced.

Florida 6, Cincinnati 2--Kevin Brown gave up one run in five innings and drove in a run with his first major-league hit to help the Marlins beat the Reds in a game delayed twice by rain at Miami.

Barry Larkin hit an inside-the-park homer for Cincinnati, his seventh. Gary Sheffield hit his 17th home run for the Marlins, who won their third in a row. The Reds have lost three in a row.

Brown, activated from the disabled list before the game, had been sidelined since May 12 because of a bruised right leg. The right-hander gave up three hits, walked two and struck out six.

Colorado 6, St. Louis 5--The Rockies scored three runs in the ninth inning and then executed a unique pickoff play to preserve a victory at St. Louis.

Eric Young singled in two runs and Ellis Burks had a run-scoring double in a three-run ninth to rally the Rockies.

“I was just trying to make contact with the pitch,” Young said. “It was a high slider and I had a real good look at it.”

Young is nine for 22 in his career against the Cardinals.

St. Louis rallied on Ozzie Smith’s RBI single, but reliever Darren Holmes faked a pickoff move to first and caught pinch-runner Miguel Mejia in a rundown. Holmes then struck out Brian Jordan to end the game for his first save.

The Rockies have won 10 of 12 and are 5-0 against the Cardinals.

New York 4, San Francisco 0--Bernard Gilkey homered twice and Mark Clark pitched seven shutout innings for the Mets at New York.

Clark scattered four hits over seven innings and Doug Henry finished up as the Mets posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1992. New York blanked San Diego, 1-0, on Sunday.

Gilkey led off the sixth and eighth innings with homers. Gilkey, who has 13 homers, has driven in 11 runs in his last seven games.

Clark (4-5) struck out five and walked one in winning his third consecutive game and second this season against the Giants.

“Right now, I can just throw any of my pitches for a strike when I have to,” Clark said. “And the more aggressive I am, the better I pitch.”
