Farmers Market Plans Birthday Fete
Nearly two years after it began as a fund-raiser for a local senior citizens’ group, the Encino Farmers Market will host a special birthday celebration Sunday.
Scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the Mark Taper Intergenerational Center at 17400 Victory Blvd., the four-hour event will feature a petting zoo, a performance by the 5-6-7-8 Dance Troupe and an appearance by City Councilwoman Laura Chick.
Opened June 26, 1994, the weekly market features about 30 farmers and vendors offering such fare as fresh flowers, eggs, fish, chicken, apricots, peaches, tomatoes, lettuce and corn, said Jo Zeitouni, director of volunteers for Organization for the Needs of the Elderly, which receives 5% of each sale.
“Every week the whole feeling is that it’s a community event,” she said, explaining that about 50 volunteers pitch in at the site each Sunday. Regular activities include face-painting and storytelling sessions for children.
More than 1,000 people visit the market each week, and Zeitouni said organizers are expecting about 3,000 for Sunday’s event. Admission is free.
