Top-seeded Monica Seles, a three-time French Open champion playing in the tournament for the first time since her stabbing, struggled to a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Belgium’s Sabine Appelmans.

“I was distracted tremendously,” said Seles, who at one point trailed, 4-1, in the final set. “I can’t lose my concentration as I did in the second set.”
