BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Phillies Bring Up Pitcher Crawford

The Philadelphia Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Crawford from triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, and he’ll make his major league debut Friday in place of injured Mike Grace. Crawford, 24, was 4-3 with a 3.46 earned-run average in 13 games (10 starts) in the minors this year.

The Chicago Cubs’ Jose Guzman, trying to comeback after shoulder surgery in June, 1994, pitched six innings for triple-A Iowa, giving up five hits, three walks, four runs and striking out two. . . . The Toronto Blue Jays have released former Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Frank Viola. . . . The Texas Rangers released infielder Jeff Frye from his contract with triple-A Oklahoma City so he could sign with the Boston Red Sox. . . . Former major league infielder Pete Coscarart, 82, was in intensive care after suffering a heart attack following his induction into the Brooklyn Dodger Hall of Fame.
