BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Astacio Struggled High and Behind

Share

Although Pedro Astacio had the worst outing by a Dodger starter this season in Wednesday night’s 7-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, giving up six earned runs and eight hits in three innings, pitching coach Dave Wallace says it was an aberration.

“He got the ball up and got behind,” Wallace said. “When you’re pitching 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1 and you elevate the ball a little bit, you’re going to have problems.

“Pedro has pitched consistently all year, we’re not worried about one start. I just talked with him a little bit about keeping the ball down.”

Pirate starter Paul Wagner left the game because of a shoulder injury after pitching to only four batters in the first inning, giving up three runs on two hits.

Wagner injured his right shoulder when he dove while trying to tag out leadoff hitter Delino DeShields, who beat out a drag bunt. He departed after giving up a one-out, run-scoring single to Mike Piazza and throwing two pitches to Eric Karros.

He was replaced by closer Dan Miceli, who finished up Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Dodgers.

The Dodgers went over the 1 million mark in attendance Thursday night, their 28th home game of the season. They went over the 1 million mark in their 28th game last season as well. . . . Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda passed Dick Williams and moved into 12th place on the all-time list of games managed with 3,024.
