MetroLink Ridership Increases 10% in May
Almost 3,000 people a day rode MetroLink trains during the first three weeks of May, an increase of more than 10% over the first three weeks in April, the Ventura County Transportation Commission reported Friday.
Commission officials attributed the sharp increase to rising gasoline prices and a marketing plan targeting college students.
The four MetroLink commuter trains make stops at stations in Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark and Simi Valley before going to downtown Los Angeles.
In April, the trains attracted about 2,700 riders a day.
In recent weeks, the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, which operates the sleek commuter trains, has been targeting university students.
As part of its ongoing marketing plans, the authority recently mailed 1,000 four-trip tickets to Cal State Northridge students with Ventura County addresses.
“The focus of the mailout is for students to take the train during finals week, promoting a stress-free time to study,” said Mary Travis, a manager with the Ventura County Transportation Commission.
