Copters, Planes Help Quell Brush Fire

More than 100 firefighters, aided by helicopters and airplanes, fought for about five hours Tuesday to control a brush fire at O’Neill Regional Park that charred about 10 acres east of Mission Viejo, authorities said.

No injuries were reported and the blaze did not threaten homes, said Maria Sabol, Orange County Fire Authority spokeswoman. The cause of the fire was not known, but authorities were investigating.

The fire broke out at Oso and Antonio parkways about noon and sped northwest through acres of dry grass and artichoke plants near Trabuco Creek, firefighters said. A 10-mph wind contributed to the quick spread of the fire, Sabol said.

Authorities dispatched three airplanes to drop fire-retardant chemicals and two helicopters to douse the fire with water taken from a nearby golf club, Sabol said. On the ground, firefighters used bulldozers to battle the blaze, which started south of the Las Flores housing development.
