City Hall Expansion Contract Awarded

City Council members awarded a $1.1-million contract Wednesday to an Oxnard company that will be responsible for the expansion of City Hall.

Viola Inc. submitted the lowest bid among six companies vying for the 4,400-square-foot expansion of the 20-year-old Camarillo complex.

When expansion plans were announced earlier this year, officials said the project was designed to make room for the larger number of city employees and officials.

The 10-month construction is expected to begin within weeks.

Currently, council members share office space. When the project is completed later this year, each of the four council members, as well as the mayor, will have offices to themselves.

The $1.1-million bid includes $938,400 for the expansion work and another $161,000 in roofing costs.

City engineers had estimated the job at about $980,000. But the bids received by the city ranged from Viola Inc.’s $1.1 million to the high bid of $1,289,000 submitted by a Santa Barbara company.

The concrete and wood building will be expanded on the west side of the 27,000-square-foot complex.
