Brush Fire North of Cajon Pass Burns 360 acres

A fire charred 360 acres and destroyed cars, trailers and structures near Cajon Pass, but was surrounded by firefighters Sunday afternoon.

A mobile home, four trailers, two barns, a dog kennel and sheds were lost, but no people or animals were hurt. Damage was estimated at $110,000.

Although no evacuation order was issued, residents of six homes left voluntarily, at the request of San Bernardino County deputies, and the Red Cross set up a shelter at a Hesperia park.

Full control was expected by midnight, authorities said.

The blaze began just before noon on the northern edges of the Cajon Pass. About 200 firefighters were joined by three helicopters and five air tankers. Nearly a year ago, a blaze in the same area charred over 1,000 acres of brush before it was extinguished. The area is notorious among firefighters for its tricky winds.

The cause was under investigation.
