Giants Activate Robby Thompson

The San Francisco Giants activated second baseman Robby Thompson from the disabled list. Thompson, 34, who played Sunday against Houston, sat out 15 games because of a sore neck. Infielder Kim Batiste was designated for assignment. . . . Infielder Tony Batista was recalled by the Oakland Athletics from triple-A Edmonton to replace second baseman Brent Gates, who went on the 15-day disabled list. Gates broke a bone in his left leg when he fouled a fastball off his shin Saturday against Milwaukee, and will sit out four weeks. . . . The New York Mets called up outfielder Andy Tomberlin from triple-A Norfolk and sent first baseman Roberto Petagine there. . . .
For the first time since stepping down Wednesday as the Cincinnati Reds’ chief executive, owner Marge Schott attended a game. She showed up in the seventh inning and left as soon as the 7-0 victory over Montreal ended. She was flanked by employees who cut off reporters’ questions.
