Oxnard Pitcher Towers Signs with Orioles

Pitcher Josh Towers of Oxnard College has signed with the Baltimore Orioles and will report to Bluefield, W.Va., of the Appalachian Rookie League on Sunday night.

Towers, a 15th-round selection, has an 11-2 record with a 1.88 earned-run average for the Condors this season.

Track and Field

Ramon Serratos of Glendale College, who finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the 1995 State junior college championships, will attend Cal State Los Angeles in the fall.

Serratos, who has run 9 minutes 17 seconds in the steeplechase, finished fifth in this year’s State meet.

He has also run 14:35 in the 5,000 and 31:15 in the 10,000 and plans to focus on those events at Cal State L.A.

Serratos will also run cross-country for the Golden Eagles. He finished 11th in the 1995 State championships to help Glendale to the team title.

Toney Veney, a co-coach at Granada Hills High for most of the past two years and an assistant at Cal State Northridge from 1984-94, has been hired as the women’s track coach at Cal State Los Angeles.

Soccer

The Las Virgenes Blazers lost to the Washington FC Royals, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Far West Regional tournament for girls 18 and under in Redmond, Wash.

Tami Pivnick scored for the Blazers.

Volleyball

Susan Terrusa has been named girls’ coach at Alemany High.

Terrusa played at UCLA and coached the Alemany junior varsity boys’ team last season.

She replaces Jamie Quaglino, who will coach the freshman football team.

Softball

The Bobby Sox District All-Star tournament will be played July 13-17 at Borchard Park in Newbury Park. Thirty teams from the Valley and Ventura areas, with players ranging in age from 9 to 14, will compete in the tournament.
