JETHAWKS REPORT : Wooten to Face Japanese Hurler

The pitching matchup for the game Monday night at the Hangar should be interesting, and not just because of the JetHawk debut of Greg Wooten. The Visalia Oaks will send Japanese right-hander Takahisa Hoshiba to the mound.

Hoshiba is on loan to the Oaks from the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Pacific League. He and Makato Ito were sent to Visalia because the Oaks are owned by a primarily Japanese group.

Hoshiba, 24, has been the best starter for the Oaks. He is 5-2 with a 3.11 earned-run average.

“He would be a guy who would attract some interest from baseball teams in America,” said Tim Torricelli, Visalia manager.

Outfielder Scott Smith, on his promotion from Wisconsin to the JetHawks: “I’m looking forward to hitting where it’s warm and the fields aren’t always soaked.”

Tonight’s Game: Visalia (John Kelly, 2-8, 7.79) at JetHawks (Ken Cloude, 8-2, 3.23), 5 p.m.
