U.S. Powers Past Australian Nationals
Seth Greisinger struck out 10 and Matt LeCroy, J.D. Drew and Chad Allen homered to lead Team USA to a 10-2 victory over the Australian national baseball team in Viera, Fla.
Greisinger (4-0, 1.33 earned-run average), of McLean, Va., gave up two hits, an unearned run and walked one in seven innings before yielding to reliever Jim Parque, who gave up three hits and an earned run in the eighth. Troy Glaus of UCLA went three for four with three runs and an RBI.
Team USA improved its summer record to 17-0, with a 38-game winning streak dating to last summer.
Meanwhile, Kris Benson, who pitched Clemson into the College World Series and is trying to become the ace of the Olympic team, won the Rotary Smith Award as college baseball player of the year in Houston. Benson finished just ahead of 1995 winner Mark Kotsay of Cal State Fullerton for the honor presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers.
