Bullfrogs Make Numerous Mistakes in 7-6 Loss to San Diego

The Sports Arena has become a house of pain and stupidity for the Bullfrogs.

Bumps, bruises, silly scuffles and 15 penalty minutes added up to a 7-6 loss to the San Diego Barracudas, a defeat that might have been prevented with a little self-restraint.

“At times both teams lost control,” Bullfrog Coach Grant Sonier said.

In squandering 50 shots, Anaheim (7-2-1) didn’t play smart in front of an announced crowd of 3,685. Team captain Victor Gervais, for example, was sent to the penalty box twice in the final five minutes, the second time for punching San Diego’s Sorenson True. Defenseman Serge Roy scored a power-play goal to tie the score at 6-6 with 1 minute 41 seconds to play.

Alan Leggett got the game winner with 17 seconds left after the Bullfrogs failed to contain Roy, who skated free with the puck behind the Bullfrog net, found Leggett open about 30 feet out and deliver the winning assist.

It was the second consecutive victory by San Diego over the Bullfrogs.

Anaheim took its lumps in other ways.

Rookie Glenn Stewart was momentarily knocked out when he was checked into an open gate to the Bullfrog bench as he tried to exit the floor. Goalie Eric Raymond, who lost for the first time in five outings, was bowled over after a hard check in front of him by teammate Darren Banks and lay motionless for several minutes in the second half. Banks, as usual, coming off his third one-game suspension for fighting, spent as much time in the penalty box for roughing as he did on the floor.

The Barracudas (4-4-1) needed the win to turn around a season that was rapidly going sour.

Lost in all the unpleasant play was another outstanding performance by Darren Perkins, who recorded a hat trick and took over the league scoring lead among defensemen with 28 points. Savo Mitrovic added three assists.
