Al Leiter pitched seven scoreless innings and Jeff Conine drove in both runs as the Florida Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves, 2-0, Friday night at Miami for their fourth consecutive victory.

Leiter (9-6) repeatedly pitched out of trouble, giving up seven hits and three walks. Terry Mathews pitched the eighth inning and Robb Nen worked the ninth for his 16th save.

The Braves had at least one baserunner in each of Leiter’s innings except the first. They stranded nine and had four innings ended by double plays.

Tom Glavine (8-5) was a hard-luck loser, giving up both runs, one of them unearned because of his error, in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up five hits and walked a season-high six, two intentionally.

Cincinnati 7, Chicago 4--Reggie Sanders homered in his first two at-bats off Frank Castillo, and Hal Morris added a solo shot, powering the Reds past the Cubs at Cincinnati.

The Reds’ sixth consecutive victory improved their record to three games under .500 (35-38) for the first time since May 14. Cincinnati has been as many as 11 games under .500.

Castillo became the second National League pitcher to lose 10 games, joining Florida’s Pat Rapp.

St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 1--Donovan Osborne gave up five hits in eight innings and John Mabry and Ron Gant each homered at St. Louis, leading the Cardinals past the Pirates.

Osborne (7-4) struck out five and walked one as the Cardinals reached the .500 mark for the fifth time in the past 11 days. Osborne has won four of his last five decisions.

Denny Neagle, (8-4) who had won three of his last four decisions, gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings.

Gant’s 10th homer of the season capped the Cardinals’ four-run eighth.

Philadelphia 7, Montreal 3--J.R. Phillips, a late addition to the lineup, hit two home runs and a double at Philadelphia, enabling the Phils to end a five-game losing streak.

Philadelphia rapped a season-high 16 hits. Benito Santiago hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Phillips followed with a homer.

Terry Mulholland (6-6) yielded seven hits in six innings, and won for the first time since May 26. He had been 0-3 in five starts since his last victory.

New York 7, Houston 2--Mark Clark won for the seventh time in eight decisions and rookie Alex Ochoa went three for four as the Mets won for the sixth time in seven games.

Clark (8-6) gave up five hits in six innings. Reliever Doug Henry pitched three scoreless innings for his fifth save as New York’s bullpen extended its consecutive scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings over nine games.

Ochoa had two singles, a double and scored twice. The 22-year-old right fielder has five hits in his last six at-bats, and the Mets are 5-1 since he was recalled from Norfolk June 21.

Doug Drabek (3-6), coming off his best performance of the season, shut down the Mets through three innings. But New York got three runs in the fourth and added three more in the fifth.

San Diego 6, San Francisco 1--Andy Ashby pitched five scoreless innings before leaving with shoulder stiffness and Chris Gwynn hit a three-run homer as the Padres handed the Giants their eighth defeat in a row.

Ashby (8-2) won his fifth consecutive decision, yielding three hits and striking out four. He lowered his earned-run average to 2.93.
