Tavares Says New Uniforms Aren’t Goofy

Disney Sports Enterprises showed its colors Friday, or at least described them.

The new Angel uniforms will be red, white and blue, Angel President Tony Tavares announced at a hastily called news conference during the game Friday night at Anaheim Stadium.

Ah, but not the red, white and blue color scheme the team currently wears.

“The colors will include red, white and blue, but different shades,” Tavares said. “There will be three hats and three different uniforms.”

The new uniform design, which must be approved by major league baseball, will be unveiled in late August or early September. The logo will also be changed significantly.

But Tavares also reiterated that the team will be called the Anaheim Angels.

It was a very un-Disney announcement--no charts, no models and no fanfare. Simply Tavares explaining that they wanted to end rumors once and for all.

“A lot has been said about the Mighty Ducks and purple and green,” Tavares said. “We never came close to changing the name. There is no reason to change something that works.

And the uniforms?

“I’m happy and I think the fans will be happy,” Tavares said. “They will be significantly different. They won’t look anything like the uniforms today. It’s new, but I don’t think baseball traditionalists will look at it and say, ‘Ugh, I hate that.’ ”
