A handcuffed woman in a squad car was shot and killed by police after she freed herself and drove the car into one of the arresting officers, police said Tuesday.

Officers on the Los Angeles Police Department’s prostitution enforcement detail saw the woman and a man engaged in lewd conduct in a parked vehicle on Mariposa Avenue at Fountain Avenue in Hollywood at 10:15 p.m. Monday, officers said.

Officers Thomas Penson and Robert Deamer handcuffed both of the woman’s hands behind her back and put her into the back seat of their unmarked patrol car.

As they stood in front of the car to interview the man, the woman was able to free her hands, move to the driver’s seat and start the car. She ran the car into Deamer, who tumbled onto the hood, according to police.

Penson fired one round, killing the woman, according to an LAPD statement.

Deamer was treated at a local hospital for injuries to both knees and back strain.

The woman has not been identified, police said.
