An 11-year-old girl suited up for an all-star softball game was killed along with her parents in a five-vehicle crash, officials said.

The San Diego County medical examiner’s office identified the victims as 11-year-old Amanda Rozsa, her mother, Darla, 53, and father, John, 54.

Amanda was the star pitcher of the softball team her father coached. Her mother was the team’s scorekeeper. The family was headed to the all-star game in Escondido.

“They went to church together. They played together. They were a real family,” said neighbor Minnie Long. “The whole family was together for evening meals. The parents insisted on it.”

Spilled chlorine and muriatic acid, which are common pool chemicals, produced a yellow cloud that combined with fog to obstruct drivers’ vision in the Saturday morning incident, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Gregg.

Victor Oliver Weisser Jr., 53, of El Cajon told authorities he was driving his big-rig truck on Interstate 15 when his vision was suddenly blocked by the yellow cloud.

Weisser, who was uninjured, braked but could not stop before hitting a 1989 Dodge Colt, Gregg said. The three occupants were killed.

“It was so thick it was like trying to drive with your hands in front of your eyes,” Weisser said.

The truck was rear-ended by a 1994 Plymouth Colt. A 1992 Sentra hit the side of the truck, and a 1986 Mazda struck the Dodge Colt, which was pinned under the truck. The three drivers and single passenger in those vehicles were treated for minor injuries.

The Rozsas, of University City, also had four older children.
