Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has appointed two San Fernando Valley residents to serve on county commissions, his office announced Monday.

Shirin A. Chase, a Sylmar resident, was selected to serve on the county’s Probation Commission, and Irene Oros, of Canoga Park, was picked for the Developmental Disabilities Board.

Chase, who works as a family therapist with Lake View Terrace-based Hathaway Children’s Services, is a member of the California Assn. of Marriage and Family Therapists and the National Council of Negro Women.

The 10-member Probation Commission advises the county’s chief probation officer, Barry Nidorf, on issues relating to the supervision of juvenile offenders on probation.

Oros, who works at CCS Industries, where she also serves on the company’s advisory board, holds a certificate of completion from Cleveland High School in Reseda.

She has also helped launch advocacy groups for people with developmental disabilities, said Yaroslavsky spokesman Joel Bellman.

“I’m very pleased that Irene will be representing me on this panel,” Yaroslavsky said in a prepared statement. “While she has developmental disabilities, she is not disabled, and indeed she is a model of what people like her can accomplish.”

The Developmental Disabilities Board’s duties include advocating for the rights of the disabled, conducting public education programs, encouraging advocacy organizations, making funding recommendations and coordinating activities with other agencies and organizations.
