Martinez Expected to Stay in Ventura

Sal Martinez, runner-up in the 1,600 in the Southern Section Division II championships for Ventura High, is expected to attend Ventura College.
Cal State Northridge expressed interest in Martinez, who ran a school-record and region-leading time of 4:17.09 to place fifth in the Masters Meet, but discovered he lacked the core-curriculum requirements to be eligible at the NCAA Division I level as a freshman.
Football
Palm Springs High defensive back Bishop Miller has committed to Cal State Northridge.
Miller, 5 feet 8, 170 pounds, was named the most valuable player in the 1996 Riverside County all-star game.
Three high school coaches from the region will be among the speakers at the Youth Football Coaches Assn. convention at Pasadena High on Saturday and Sunday.
Hart Coach Mike Herrington will speak at 11 a.m. Saturday about single-back offenses. On Sunday, San Fernando assistant Mike Sillette discusses defensive line play and tackling (11 a.m.) and Newbury Park Coach George Hurley will be among four coaches putting on a passing league demonstration (1 p.m.).

Thirty-six high school teams are competing in a passing tournament today and Saturday at Valley College. The first eight games are scheduled to start today at noon.
