FAA Says No Changes on Tap at Whiteman

Share

Despite a recent string of airplane crashes near Whiteman Airport, Federal Aviation Administration officials said Tuesday that they don’t plan a special investigation or any changes in safety regulations at the airport.

On Monday a student pilot crash-landed a single-engine airplane, a Belanca Scout, in the frontyard of a home in the 13300 block of Desmond Street in Pacoima. No one was injured, but a car parked in the frontyard of the home was damaged.

On May 18, four people escaped serious injuries in two separate crashes near Whiteman.

A student pilot suffered minor abrasions when her single-engine Cessna crashed into a power pole near Foothill Boulevard and Yarnell Street in Sylmar.

Less than an hour later, a twin-engine Beechcraft 55 carrying three people crash-landed on the 15th hole of the Hansen Dam Golf Course. The pilot had just taken off from Whiteman. There were no injuries in that crash.

FAA Western Regional spokesman Mitch Barker said his agency is aware of the incidents, but will not make any immediate changes.

Since the accidents happened so close to one another, Barker said investigators haven’t yet had enough time to examine the wreckage thoroughly or determine what went wrong in each accident.
