The season-opening Seaside Invitational on Sept. 14 has been moved due to financial considerations to Ventura County Fairgrounds on Sept. 14 from San Buenaventura State Beach.

Steve Blum, meet director and Buena High girls’ coach, said budget cuts to the state park system have led to increased fees for use of the park and to decreased service because of reductions in park personnel.

The meet, which annually attracts some of the top runners from Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties, had been run at San Buenaventura State Beach for the past seven years.

The new course is expected to be comparable to previous ones--5,000 meters long, flat and fast.

A fifth division has been added to the State championships, which will be run Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

The meet, which began in 1987, consisted of three boys’ and girls’ divisions based on student body enrollment from 1987-89 before expanding to four in 1990.

The new format defines Division I schools as those with enrollments of 1,563 or more.

Division II schools will range between 1,250-1,562 students, followed by Division III at 969-1,249, Division IV at 525-968 and Division V at 524 and below.

The realignment is not expected to affect the status of any of the area’s traditionally strong teams.

Thousand Oaks, Hoover, Buena and Hart are expected to remain in Division I, with defending state champion Nordhoff staying in Division III and state champion Louisville remaining in Division IV.
